Copa do Mundo FIFA: Created in 1930, with the first edition in Uruguay, it is the biggest national-team competition in the world and the most watched tournament on the planet. Brazil are the only five-time champions, with titles in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002, followed by Germany and Italy with four each. Held every four years, it grew from thirteen to 32 teams over time and expanded to 48 from the 2026 edition, hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Cabo Verde: An archipelago of just over half a million people, independent from Portugal since 1975 and a FIFA member since 1986, Cape Verde built its national team, the Blue Sharks, on a diaspora spread across Portugal, the Netherlands, France and the United States. Its rise began in 2013, when it reached the quarter-finals on its Africa Cup of Nations debut, a result it repeated in 2023. Qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, its first, made it one of the smallest countries ever to play at the finals. The debut exceeded every expectation: it finished second in its group, ahead of two-time world champions Uruguay, and only went out in the knockout stage, losing 3-2 to Argentina.
Arábia Saudita: A three-time Asian champion (1984, 1988 and 1996), it made its World Cup debut in 1994 in the United States and reached the round of 16 straight away, powered by Saeed Al-Owairan's legendary solo goal against Belgium, a run from inside his own half that became a symbol of Gulf football. It then played in 1998, 2002 and 2006, but also endured humiliations such as the 8-0 defeat to Germany in 2002. Its most famous moment came in Qatar in 2022: a 2-1 comeback win over Lionel Messi's Argentina, sealed by Salem Al-Dawsari, one of the biggest upsets in the tournament's history, celebrated with a national holiday the next day. In the 2020s the country began investing heavily in its domestic league, which lured Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar and Karim Benzema, and was chosen to host the 2034 World Cup.
