Latidos Mundialistas: ARGELIA busca REVANCHA histórica ante AUSTRIA en el Mundial 2026
Copa do Mundo FIFA: Created in 1930, with the first edition in Uruguay, it is the biggest national-team competition in the world and the most watched tournament on the planet. Brazil are the only five-time champions, with titles in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002, followed by Germany and Italy with four each. Held every four years, it grew from thirteen to 32 teams over time and expanded to 48 from the 2026 edition, hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Argélia: Even before independence, Algerian football had a political role: in 1958, players based in France walked out on their clubs to form the National Liberation Front team, which toured the world for the cause. On its World Cup debut in 1982 it beat West Germany 2-1, with goals from Rabah Madjer and Lakhdar Belloumi, only to be eliminated by the convenient result between West Germany and Austria in Gijón, an episode that led FIFA to schedule the final group games simultaneously. It has won two Africa Cup of Nations titles, in 1990 on home soil and in 2019 in Egypt with Riyad Mahrez, and reached the round of 16 at the 2014 World Cup, taking eventual champions Germany to extra time. Madjer, scorer of the famous backheel goal for Porto in the 1987 European Cup final, remains its greatest idol.
Áustria: In the 1930s it had the Wunderteam, Hugo Meisl and Matthias Sindelar's side that dazzled Europe and finished fourth at the 1934 World Cup; it qualified for 1938 but never played, as the country had been annexed by Nazi Germany months earlier. Its best finish is third place in 1954 in Switzerland, a tournament in which it beat the hosts 7-5, the highest-scoring match in World Cup history. In 1978 in Argentina it pulled off the "Miracle of Córdoba", a 3-2 win over reigning champions West Germany with two goals from Hans Krankl. After 1998 it spent 28 years away from the World Cup, returning in 2026 under Ralf Rangnick.
