Copa do Mundo FIFA: Created in 1930, with the first edition in Uruguay, it is the biggest national-team competition in the world and the most watched tournament on the planet. Brazil are the only five-time champions, with titles in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002, followed by Germany and Italy with four each. Held every four years, it grew from thirteen to 32 teams over time and expanded to 48 from the 2026 edition, hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Inglaterra: The birthplace of modern football, England founded the Football Association and codified the laws of the game in 1863, and played the first international match against Scotland in 1872. Outside FIFA in the early years, it only made its World Cup debut in 1950, suffering a humiliating defeat to the United States, and in 1953 it lost 6-3 to Hungary at Wembley, shattering the myth of English invincibility. Its only world title came at home in 1966, with Alf Ramsey's side of Bobby Moore and Bobby Charlton and Geoff Hurst's hat-trick in the final against West Germany. Decades of frustration followed, marked by penalty shoot-out defeats and by the semi-finals of 1990, with Paul Gascoigne's tears, and 2018. It lost the Euro 2020 and Euro 2024 finals, and at the 2026 World Cup it finished third, its best result on foreign soil, led by Harry Kane, the national team's all-time top scorer.
República Democrática do Congo: Under the name Zaire, imposed by dictator Mobutu Sese Seko, the Leopards became the first sub-Saharan African team to play at a World Cup, in 1974 in West Germany, after conquering the continent with Mulamba Ndaye's nine goals at that year's Africa Cup of Nations, a record that still stands. The World Cup ended badly, with a 9-0 defeat to Yugoslavia amid reports that the regime had threatened the players, and with the image of Mwepu Ilunga booting the ball away before a Brazil free kick. The country has two African titles (1968 and 1974) and a strong club scene led by TP Mazembe, five-time CAF Champions League winners and the first African club to reach the Club World Cup final, in 2010. It returned to the World Cup in 2026, 52 years later.
