Campeonato Brasileiro: The quest for a national champion began with the Taça Brasil in 1959, followed by the Torneio Roberto Gomes Pedrosa in the 1960s and the first Campeonato Nacional de Clubes in 1971. It went through dozens of formats, at one point with more than 90 clubs, and only became stable in 2003 with the adoption of a double round-robin league, now with twenty clubs. Palmeiras are the record champions with 12 titles, followed by Santos and Flamengo with eight each, then Corinthians and São Paulo, and the competition awards Brazil's main places in the Copa Libertadores.
