Copa do Mundo FIFA: Created in 1930, with the first edition in Uruguay, it is the biggest national-team competition in the world and the most watched tournament on the planet. Brazil are the only five-time champions, with titles in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002, followed by Germany and Italy with four each. Held every four years, it grew from thirteen to 32 teams over time and expanded to 48 from the 2026 edition, hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Holanda: It invented a new way of playing: Total Football, the system of Rinus Michels and Johan Cruyff in which players constantly swapped positions, was born at the Ajax side that won three straight European Cups from 1971 to 1973 and dazzled the world at the 1974 World Cup, but the "Clockwork Orange" lost the final to West Germany in Munich. It was runner-up again in 1978, against Argentina in Buenos Aires, and in 2010, against Spain, both after extra time, making it the nation with the most World Cup finals and no title. The big trophy came at Euro 1988, with the Milan trio of Ruud Gullit, Frank Rijkaard and Marco van Basten, whose spectacular volley lit up the final against the Soviet Union. It also finished third at the 2014 World Cup, with Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie, and produced players such as Dennis Bergkamp and Virgil van Dijk.
Marrocos: An African World Cup pioneer, Morocco became in 1970 the first team from the continent to play at the finals since 1934 and, in 1986 in Mexico, the first African and Arab side to win a group, ahead of England, Poland and Portugal, before falling to West Germany in the round of 16 to a late goal. Its greatest feat came in Qatar in 2022: Walid Regragui's side, with Achraf Hakimi, Yassine Bounou and Hakim Ziyech, knocked out Spain and Portugal to become the first African team to reach a World Cup semi-final, finishing fourth. African champion only once, in 1976, the country has reaped the rewards of investment in the Mohammed VI Academy with Olympic bronze in 2024 and, after five failed bids, will co-host the 2030 World Cup with Spain and Portugal.
