Copa do Mundo FIFA: Created in 1930, with the first edition in Uruguay, it is the biggest national-team competition in the world and the most watched tournament on the planet. Brazil are the only five-time champions, with titles in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002, followed by Germany and Italy with four each. Held every four years, it grew from thirteen to 32 teams over time and expanded to 48 from the 2026 edition, hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

It dominates CONCACAF, with the most Gold Cup titles, won the 1999 Confederations Cup and took Olympic gold at London 2012, beating Brazil in the final. Antonio Carbajal, Hugo Sánchez and Rafael Márquez are among its greatest idols.

Equador: For decades it was a bit-part player in South America, until it turned the altitude of Quito, almost 2,850 metres above sea level, into a weapon in qualifying and reached its first World Cup in 2002 in South Korea and Japan. Since then it has been a regular: it reached the round of 16 in Germany in 2006, going out only to a David Beckham free kick for England, returned in 2014 and opened the 2022 World Cup by beating hosts Qatar with two goals from Enner Valencia, the country's all-time top scorer. In 2008 LDU Quito became the first Ecuadorian club to win the Copa Libertadores. Agustín Delgado, Manchester United captain Antonio Valencia and Moisés Caicedo are among the names who took Ecuadorian football into the European elite.
