Copa do Mundo FIFA: Created in 1930, with the first edition in Uruguay, it is the biggest national-team competition in the world and the most watched tournament on the planet. Brazil are the only five-time champions, with titles in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002, followed by Germany and Italy with four each. Held every four years, it grew from thirteen to 32 teams over time and expanded to 48 from the 2026 edition, hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Portugal: Its World Cup debut, in England in 1966, brought third place and a hero: Eusébio, star of the Benfica side that won two European Cups, was the tournament's top scorer with nine goals, four of them in the comeback against North Korea after trailing 3-0. After decades of inconsistency, the generation of Luís Figo and Rui Costa, back-to-back Under-20 world champions in 1989 and 1991, took the country to the Euro 2004 final, lost at home to Greece, and to fourth place at the 2006 World Cup. The first major title came at Euro 2016 in Paris, with Éder's extra-time goal against France, followed by the Nations League in 2019 and 2025. Cristiano Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d'Or winner, the all-time top scorer in men's international football and the first player to score at five World Cups, is the symbol of this era.
Espanha: For decades Spain was the national team that failed to match the stature of its clubs: despite winning Euro 1964 at home and finishing fourth at the 1950 World Cup, it piled up disappointments while Real Madrid and Barcelona ruled Europe. Everything changed with the tiki-taka generation of Xavi, Iniesta, Casillas and David Villa, which won Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, with Andrés Iniesta's extra-time winner in the final against the Netherlands, and Euro 2012, an unprecedented run of three straight major titles. A new generation, led by Rodri, Pedri and Lamine Yamal, took the country back to the top: it won Euro 2024, a record fourth European title, Olympic gold in Paris and, in 2026, a second World Cup, beating Argentina 1-0 in the final with an extra-time goal from Ferran Torres at MetLife Stadium.
