Copa do Mundo FIFA: Created in 1930, with the first edition in Uruguay, it is the biggest national-team competition in the world and the most watched tournament on the planet. Brazil are the only five-time champions, with titles in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002, followed by Germany and Italy with four each. Held every four years, it grew from thirteen to 32 teams over time and expanded to 48 from the 2026 edition, hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Escócia: It played the first international match in football history, a 0-0 draw with England in Glasgow on 30 November 1872, and helped shape the modern game with a short-passing style that contrasted with the English dribbling game. The country also exported legendary managers such as Matt Busby, Bill Shankly, Jock Stein and Alex Ferguson, and saw Celtic become, in 1967, the first British club to win the European Cup with a side born entirely around Glasgow. That same year Scotland beat world champions England 3-2 at Wembley. At World Cups, however, the story is one of frustration: in eight appearances up to 1998 it never got past the first round, and in 1974 it went out unbeaten. Denis Law, the 1964 Ballon d'Or winner, and Kenny Dalglish are its greatest idols; the return to the World Cup came in 2026, after 28 years.
Brasil: The only national team to have played at every edition of the World Cup, it is the most successful in the tournament's history, with five titles: 1958 in Sweden, with the emergence of a 17-year-old Pelé; 1962 in Chile, with Garrincha; 1970 in Mexico, with the side of Pelé, Tostão, Gérson, Jairzinho and Rivellino, widely seen as one of the greatest ever; 1994 in the United States, with Romário; and 2002 in South Korea and Japan, with Ronaldo. It also carries deep scars: the 1950 Maracanazo, the 1982 defeat to Italy that ended the dream of the Zico and Sócrates side, and the 7-1 loss to Germany at home in 2014. It has nine Copa América titles, four Confederations Cups and two Olympic gold medals (2016 and 2020). In 2026, for the first time, it played a World Cup under a foreign coach, Italy's Carlo Ancelotti.
