Copa do Mundo FIFA: Created in 1930, with the first edition in Uruguay, it is the biggest national-team competition in the world and the most watched tournament on the planet. Brazil are the only five-time champions, with titles in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002, followed by Germany and Italy with four each. Held every four years, it grew from thirteen to 32 teams over time and expanded to 48 from the 2026 edition, hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Iraque: The story of Iraqi football is inseparable from the country's history. In 1986, in the middle of the war with Iran and playing its home games abroad, the team coached by Brazilian Evaristo de Macedo played its only World Cup until then, in Mexico, where Ahmed Radhi scored its only goal, against Belgium. In the following years, players reported punishment and torture under Uday Hussein, Saddam's son, who ran sport in the country. Its defining moment came in 2007: amid the sectarian violence that followed the US invasion, Iraq, coached by Brazilian Jorvan Vieira, won the Asian Cup with a Younis Mahmoud header against Saudi Arabia in the final, a title celebrated by Shias, Sunnis and Kurds alike. It has also won four Gulf Cups and returned to the World Cup in 2026, 40 years later.

Noruega: In a nation of winter sports, Norway has had moments of huge symbolism in football: Olympic bronze in 1936 in Berlin, including a 2-0 win over Germany in front of Adolf Hitler, and the 2-1 win over England in 1981, immortalised by Bjørge Lillelien's commentary. It played its first World Cup in 1938 but only returned in the 1990s, with Egil "Drillo" Olsen's direct football, which took the team to second in the FIFA ranking, to the 1994 and 1998 World Cups and to a historic 2-1 win over Brazil in Marseille. After 28 years away, it returned to the World Cup in 2026 with the generation of Erling Haaland and Martin Ødegaard, beat Brazil once again, this time in the round of 16, and reached the quarter-finals for the first time.
