Copa do Mundo FIFA: Created in 1930, with the first edition in Uruguay, it is the biggest national-team competition in the world and the most watched tournament on the planet. Brazil are the only five-time champions, with titles in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002, followed by Germany and Italy with four each. Held every four years, it grew from thirteen to 32 teams over time and expanded to 48 from the 2026 edition, hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Austrália: In a country split between rugby, cricket and Australian rules football, the Socceroos made their World Cup debut in 1974 in West Germany, but spent 32 years away before returning in 2006, when Guus Hiddink led them to the round of 16 and only a stoppage-time Francesco Totti penalty sent eventual champions Italy through. That same year Australia left the Oceania confederation to qualify through Asia, and it has not missed a World Cup since, reaching the round of 16 again in 2022, when it fell to Argentina. In 2015 it won the Asian Cup on home soil. Tim Cahill, scorer of Australia's first World Cup goal, Mark Viduka and Harry Kewell are its standard-bearers.
Egito: A pioneer of African football, Egypt was the first country on the continent to join FIFA, in 1923, and the first African and Arab nation to play at a World Cup, in 1934 in Italy, where it lost 4-2 to Hungary. It was a founding member of the Confederation of African Football and won the first Africa Cup of Nations in 1957; it is now the tournament's most successful side, with seven titles, three of them in a row (2006, 2008 and 2010) under Hassan Shehata and with Mohamed Aboutrika on the pitch. It is also home to Al Ahly, Africa's most decorated club. After 1990 it spent 28 years away from the World Cup, returning in 2018 led by Liverpool idol Mohamed Salah, and in 2026 it reached the round of 16 of a World Cup for the first time.
