Copa do Mundo FIFA: Created in 1930, with the first edition in Uruguay, it is the biggest national-team competition in the world and the most watched tournament on the planet. Brazil are the only five-time champions, with titles in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002, followed by Germany and Italy with four each. Held every four years, it grew from thirteen to 32 teams over time and expanded to 48 from the 2026 edition, hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Uzbequistão: Independent since the end of the Soviet Union in 1991, Uzbekistan chose to join the Asian Football Confederation and, at its first attempt, won gold at the 1994 Asian Games in Hiroshima. It became one of the continent's most consistent sides but suffered painful qualifying heartbreaks: in 2005 a play-off win over Bahrain was annulled because of a refereeing error and it went out after the replay; in 2013 it lost the Asian play-off to Jordan on penalties. The breakthrough came through its youth teams, with Asian Under-23 and Under-20 titles in 2018 and 2023 that produced players such as Manchester City's Abdukodir Khusanov, alongside veterans like Eldor Shomurodov. In 2026 the White Wolves played at their first World Cup, the first by a Central Asian country.

Colômbia: Colombian football first caught the world's attention with El Dorado, the rebel league that operated outside FIFA between 1949 and 1954 and brought Alfredo Di Stéfano and other South American stars to Millonarios. On its World Cup debut in 1962 in Chile it snatched a 4-4 draw with the Soviet Union, with Marcos Coll scoring directly from a corner past Lev Yashin, the only such goal in the tournament's history. The generation of Carlos Valderrama, René Higuita and Faustino Asprilla thrashed Argentina 5-0 in Buenos Aires in 1993, but the 1994 World Cup ended in tragedy with the murder of defender Andrés Escobar after an own goal. It won the 2001 Copa América on home soil and reached the quarter-finals of the 2014 World Cup, where James Rodríguez finished as top scorer.
