Copa do Mundo FIFA: Created in 1930, with the first edition in Uruguay, it is the biggest national-team competition in the world and the most watched tournament on the planet. Cabo Verde: An archipelago of just over half a million people, independent from Portugal since 1975 and a FIFA member since 1986, Cape Verde built its national team, the Blue Sharks, on a diaspora spread across Portugal, the Netherlands, France and the United States. Its rise began in 2013, when it reached the quarter-finals on its Africa Cup of Nations debut, a result it repeated in 2023. Qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, its first, made it one of the smallest countries ever to play at the finals. The debut exceeded every expectation: it finished second in its group, ahead of two-time world champions Uruguay, and only went out in the knockout stage, losing 3-2 to Argentina.
