Copa do Mundo FIFA: Created in 1930, with the first edition in Uruguay, it is the biggest national-team competition in the world and the most watched tournament on the planet. Brazil are the only five-time champions, with titles in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002, followed by Germany and Italy with four each. Held every four years, it grew from thirteen to 32 teams over time and expanded to 48 from the 2026 edition, hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Uruguai: A country of around 3.5 million people that became football's first world power: it won the Olympic tournaments of 1924 in Paris and 1928 in Amsterdam, which the Uruguayan federation counts as world titles (hence the four stars on the shirt), and won the first World Cup on home soil in 1930, beating Argentina in the final at the Estadio Centenario. In 1950 it pulled off the Maracanazo, with goals from Juan Alberto Schiaffino and Alcides Ghiggia and the leadership of captain Obdulio Varela, silencing 200,000 people at the Maracanã. It has 15 Copa América titles and reached the World Cup semi-finals in 1954, 1970 and 2010, when Diego Forlán was named player of the tournament. The "garra charrúa" fighting spirit runs through the generations, from Enzo Francescoli to Luis Suárez and Edinson Cavani, the national team's all-time top scorers.
Espanha: For decades Spain was the national team that failed to match the stature of its clubs: despite winning Euro 1964 at home and finishing fourth at the 1950 World Cup, it piled up disappointments while Real Madrid and Barcelona ruled Europe. Everything changed with the tiki-taka generation of Xavi, Iniesta, Casillas and David Villa, which won Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, with Andrés Iniesta's extra-time winner in the final against the Netherlands, and Euro 2012, an unprecedented run of three straight major titles. A new generation, led by Rodri, Pedri and Lamine Yamal, took the country back to the top: it won Euro 2024, a record fourth European title, Olympic gold in Paris and, in 2026, a second World Cup, beating Argentina 1-0 in the final with an extra-time goal from Ferran Torres at MetLife Stadium.
