Argentina’s Late Comeback Against England
Copa do Mundo FIFA: Created in 1930, with the first edition in Uruguay, it is the biggest national-team competition in the world and the most watched tournament on the planet. Brazil are the only five-time champions, with titles in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002, followed by Germany and Italy with four each. Held every four years, it grew from thirteen to 32 teams over time and expanded to 48 from the 2026 edition, hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Inglaterra: The birthplace of modern football, England founded the Football Association and codified the laws of the game in 1863, and played the first international match against Scotland in 1872. Outside FIFA in the early years, it only made its World Cup debut in 1950, suffering a humiliating defeat to the United States, and in 1953 it lost 6-3 to Hungary at Wembley, shattering the myth of English invincibility. Its only world title came at home in 1966, with Alf Ramsey's side of Bobby Moore and Bobby Charlton and Geoff Hurst's hat-trick in the final against West Germany. Decades of frustration followed, marked by penalty shoot-out defeats and by the semi-finals of 1990, with Paul Gascoigne's tears, and 2018. It lost the Euro 2020 and Euro 2024 finals, and at the 2026 World Cup it finished third, its best result on foreign soil, led by Harry Kane, the national team's all-time top scorer.
Argentina: A three-time world champion, it won the 1978 World Cup on home soil behind Mario Kempes's goals; 1986 in Mexico, with Diego Maradona's masterpiece, including both the "Hand of God" and the "Goal of the Century" against England in the same match; and 2022 in Qatar, in a final against France settled on penalties that finally crowned Lionel Messi. It is the most successful side in Copa América history, with 16 titles, the latest in 2021 at the Maracanã and in 2024, and has two Olympic gold medals (2004 and 2008). It has also lost several World Cup finals: 1930 to Uruguay, 1990 and 2014 to Germany, and 2026, when it arrived as holders and lost 1-0 to Spain after extra time. Alfredo Di Stéfano, who made his name in Spain, completes its gallery of geniuses.
